Failed to start PhotoStage with error "Could not initialize video output" when using WINE

By default, WINE is able to determine the amount of video memory on the graphics card. However, there are instances where it would not be able to, mostly when using proprietary drivers.

When such instance occurs, you can use the following options to fix it:

Option 1: Using Winetricks

Winetricks is a helper script for configuring WINE, as well as other things. To download winetricks, see the “Getting winetricks” section HERE.

Once you have downloaded it, add execution permission and then launch the script.

Step 1: Choose “Select the default wineprefix” and press OK.

Choose a Wine Prefix

Step 2: Choose “Change settings” and press OK.

Current Prefix Is

Step 3: Choose the appropriate “videomemorysize” option depending on your video card and press OK. If you do not know your video card memory, we advise to choose “videomemorysize=512”.

Current Prefix Is 2

Step 4: Close winetricks by repeatedly pressing the close button until it exits.

Option 2: Using a Simple Script

  1. Download this script.
  2. Open Terminal and enter "chmod + x wine_directx_fix.sh
  3. Launch the script

Option 3: Manually Adding the Video Memory Size to WINE

Step A: Finding the amount of video memory

Note:If you already know the amount of video memory, you can skip this part.

  1. Open the terminal either by shortcut key (Ctrl + Alt + T), or by pressing right click on the empty Desktop and choosing "Open in Terminal".
  2. Use the following commands to know the amount of video memory that you have:
  1. Type in "glxinfo | egrep -i 'device|memory'" and look for the value under Video memory.
  2. Type in "sudo dmesg | grep drm", enter the sudo password, and look for the value under "Detected VRAM RAM=".

Step B: Adding the amount of video memory to registry:

Note:This is taken from the WINE documentation HERE.

  1. Open the terminal either by shortcut key (Ctrl + Alt + T), or by pressing right click on the empty Desktop and choosing "Open in Terminal".
  2. Type "wine regedit". This will bring up the registry editor for WINE.
  3. Search for the "Wine" key under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software".
  4. Search for the "Direct3D" key under "Wine". If it does not exist, create the key by pressing right click on the "Wine" key, choosing the "New > Key" option and typing "Direct3D" as the name.
  5. Press right click on the "Direct3D" key, choose the "New > String Value" and typing "VideoMemorySize" as the name. The value will appear on the right pane window.
  6. Press right click on the "VideoMemorySize" value and choose "Modify...". Enter the amount of video memory that you have in MB (e.g. if you have a 512MB video memory, then type in "512") and click OK.
  7. Close the registry editor.

If the problem is not fixed, run the application under WINE in the terminal using the command "wine &> winetrace.txt".

WINE will log DirectX errors in the winetrace.txt file, which can be sent to technical experts for help.
