Can I extract the audio from the video as a separate file to edit?

Yes. Add the video to a bin, right-click on it and select Save Linked Audio Clip as New File. Now find the audio file in the VideoPad bins, right-click on it and select Edit Outside of VideoPad to edit the audio track in WavePad.
